This is 1101 (affectionately known as “Tommy”), a statue of a First World War soldier
by artist Ray Lonsdale, displayed in Seaham, County Durham. It depicts a First World War soldier, just one minute after the armistice came into force.
I’ve loved Tommy since I first heard about him. I love the sense of feeling Ray Lonsdale has managed to get into a ‘lump of steel’. There’s an intense emotion in Tommy. And, I get that every time I’ve visited him. I’ve tried to capture that sense in this artwork.
